STANDING COMMITTEES
Across our union, thousands of UAW members participate in one or more local union standing committees. They are rewarded by feelings of accomplishment brought about from working with their union brothers and sisters on meaningful projects and “being the change” they want to see for working people. Still, we need many more activists at the table to help.
ARTICLE 44 OF THE UAW Constitution requires each Local Union to establish 11 identified standing committees, they are as follows:
Citizenship and Legislative- mostly referred to as the Community Action Program, which you may know as CAP. It’s the worksite political-legislative arm of the Local Union and the vital workplace political activator.
Civil and Human Rights- informs the members of steps and procedures. This includes filing complaints and hearings whenever members believe their rights have been violated by their union members or management. Members on this committee feel a moral obligation to speak out about injustice and certain issues.
Community Services- performs the critical task of helping members and their families in times of need. Any time during a natural disaster or emergency situation, this committee always lends a helping hand. When the union decides to strike, the Community Service Committee is on the frontline assisting and helping to organize a successful strike for the membership.
Conservation and Recreation- This committee supports leisure time activities. Members on the shop floor work hard; participating in these activities can help combat stress. Activities range from Easter Egg Hunts, paint parties, various sports leagues and much more.
Constitution and Bylaws- establishes the rules by which the Local Union operates. It sets the stage and standards for how the Local will function.
Education- educating and training the membership is the primary responsibility of the Education Committee. They determine the needs of the membership and provide classes, materials, and information for education.
Union Label- supports the labor movement by informing and educating members about union-made products.
Veterans- members who are willing to represent the interest of all active and retired UAW veterans and their families.
Local Union Women’s Committee- works to further the gains of women in the workplace and society. The sisters and brothers on the Women’s committee encourage women to become active in local, national, and community causes programs.
Consumer Affairs- committee members believe that the labor movement should monitor the social conscience and performance of companies in order to provide safe and honest products and services. The Consumer Affairs Committee also strives to keep the membership informed on various consumer protection activities.
