Health and Safety
Unsafe/Unhealthy Job Conditions
The UAW in conjunction with the labor movement have always led the charge to protect working people from workplace injury, illness and death. Working with allies, we have won strong protections against hazards and stronger rights for workers. Through organizing and collective bargaining, unions have gained even stronger protections and rights that have given workers a real voice in safety and health at the workplace.
You have the right to a workplace free of recognized health and safety hazards. Employees should recognize and be aware that factories are a dangerous place and will always have hazards. Employees should never become complacent on their job site. You are your brothers/sister's keeper. Laws are in place to protect you from employers who put profit before the health and safety of their workers. With the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 Congress created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA serves to ensure safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women by setting and enforcing standards and providing training, outreach, education and assistance. OSHA is part of the U.S. Department of Labor.
